The problem with AI prose

You ask ChatGPT or Claude a question. You get 500 words of well-written prose. It looks helpful. But try to find the three risks mentioned in paragraph four. Try to extract just the action items. Try to copy-paste the key insights into your notes without reformatting.

Prose is optimized for reading. It is not optimized for scanning, extracting, or reusing. And in the age of AI — where you might process dozens of AI responses per day — the bottleneck is no longer generation. It's comprehension and retention.

The fix is simple: instead of asking AI for prose, ask for CLN format.

What CLN output looks like

Here's the same AI response in two formats. First, prose:

GraphQL offers several advantages over REST for modern applications.
It reduces over-fetching by letting clients request exactly the fields
they need. It also provides strong typing through its schema system.
However, there are downsides: caching is harder since there's no HTTP
cache by default, and the N+1 query problem can cause performance
issues. Teams should be aware of the learning curve, which typically
takes about two months. One significant risk is breaking existing
mobile clients during migration...

Now the same information in CLN:

CLN output
ANALYSIS: GraphQL vs REST for SaaS Product
= API architecture decision for modern web applications

+ reduces over-fetching (client requests exactly needed fields)
    + strong typing via schema
    + single endpoint simplifies frontend
    - caching harder (no HTTP cache by default)
    - N+1 query problem without DataLoader
    - learning curve ~2 months for backend teams
! migration risk: may break existing mobile clients
@mitigation: run both in parallel for 6 months

. adopt for new features, don't migrate legacy
? CDN compatibility with GraphQL POST requests

Same information. But now you can instantly scan for risks (!), count the pros and cons, find action items (.), and spot open questions (?) — all without reading a single sentence.

Ready-to-use prompts

Universal CLN prompt

Add this to any request to get structured output:

Prompt
Respond in CLN (Cognitive Ladder Notation) format:
- Header at line start: SUMMARY: or ANALYSIS:
- 4-space indented operators: = (definition), . (action),
  + (pro), - (con), ! (risk), ? (question), @ (metadata)
- One fact per line. No prose filler. No markdown.
- Indent sub-details by 8 spaces.

Summarization prompt

Prompt
Summarize the following in CLN format. Use ^summarize template:
SUMMARY: [Title]
    = core thesis
    . key points (3-5)
    + strengths
    - weaknesses
    ! risks
    ? open questions
    @source: [origin]

Decision analysis prompt

Prompt
Analyze this decision in CLN format:
ANALYSIS: [Decision Statement]
    = context
    + arguments for (with data)
    - arguments against (with data)
    ! risks and blockers
    . recommendation
        @timeline: when
        @owner: who
? what we still don't know

Meeting notes prompt

Prompt
Structure these meeting notes in CLN format:
MEETING: [Title] — [Date]
    @team: [participants]
    = decisions made
    . action items (with @owner and @deadline)
    ! blockers
? open questions for next meeting

Why this works: the science

CLN
ANALYSIS: Why CLN AI Output Beats Prose
= structured output activates deeper processing in the reader

. operator scanning replaces linear reading (faster by 3-5x)
. semantic typing enables selective attention ("show me only risks")
. copy-paste ready: no reformatting needed for notes or docs

+ reduces cognitive load: structure is visible, not hidden in prose
+ fights digital amnesia: reviewing CLN engages active processing
+ AI-parsable: downstream tools can extract typed information
    - less suitable for narrative or emotional content
    - requires initial learning of 4-9 operators

! don't use CLN when you need persuasion or storytelling
    * use prose for blogs, emails, essays — CLN for analysis and notes

Try it now

Open your preferred AI chat. Paste this exact prompt:

Copy this
Explain the pros and cons of microservices architecture in CLN format.
Use: = (definition), . (action/point), + (pro), - (con), ! (risk), ? (question).
One fact per line. No prose. No markdown.

Compare the result to what you'd normally get. The difference is immediate: scannable structure instead of a wall of text.
