Cognitive Load
Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) describes the mental effort used in working memory. Since humans
can hold only ~4 items at once, CLN is engineered to strip away Extraneous Load (presentation waste)
so you can focus on Germane Load (actual thinking).
01/Mental Capacity
Allocation
Extraneous (Waste)
Intrinsic (Content)
Germane (Learning)
02/The Prose Camouflage
The Enemy
- Connective Tissue: Words like
"furthermore" or "it is important to note" carry zero information.
- Linear Search: The brain must read
every word to distinguish a Task from a Risk.
! Result: Decision fatigue occurs
before the work even begins.
03/CLN Optimization Strategy
CLN minimizes waste via visual semantics:
+ Operator Anchors: Symbols like
! and . use pre-attentive processing for instant recognition.
+ Spatial Meaning: Indentation (The
Ladder) encodes hierarchy without verbal explanation.
+ Memory Offloading: The structure
itself holds the context, freeing up your internal RAM.
04Speed of Processing
. Prose: ~5 seconds to find a specific
risk in a paragraph.
. CLN: ~1 second to detect the same risk
via the
! operator.* Self-Test: Can we eliminate Intrinsic
Load? || No. Intrinsic load belongs to
the complexity of the topic itself. CLN only eliminates the *Extraneous* waste of the delivery format.
