Cognitive Workbench NEW TERM
= integrated workspace where compression, anchoring and salience converge @ CLN v2.1 · episodic interface layer
Double-click any line to anchor. Select + Right-click to tagmarry — that IS semantic compression in practice.
01//DefinitionTerm
// ##cw-def =Cognitive Workbench — the integrated mental and digital space where a reader transforms passive content into personally encoded knowledge .three tools on the workbench: semantic compression · associative anchor · interactivity-induced salience .CLN documents are designed to be workbenches — not just documents // ##cw-origin →extends: Elaborative Rehearsal — workbench is where elaboration happens →extends: Event Boundary — each workbench action triggers a boundary →depends on: Spatial Addressability — anchors need stable IDs

02//Semantic CompressionTechnique
// ##sc-def =Semantic Compression — the cognitive act of distilling a paragraph, block, or idea into a single personal label .compression is lossy by design — forces choice of what matters to you .the label becomes a retrieval handle for the full original meaning
Compression in action
Episodic memory encodes context-rich events with spatial, temporal, and emotional markers. Retrieval is cue-dependent — the right environmental or internal cue reactivates the full episode via pattern completion in hippocampal networks.
→semantic compression via #tagmarry
#hippocampal-retrieval-cues
// ##sc-mechanism *compression requires semantic processing — you must understand to compress *the label activates the Generative Effect — you created it, not copied *later: seeing the label triggers full episode reconstruction — not just the tag →CLN short lines are pre-compressed content — compression already done by author →#tagmarry adds a second compression layer — author's compression + reader's compression

03//Associative AnchorTerm
// ##aa-def =Associative Anchor — a tag or label used as a memory hook that triggers recall of a full semantic network, not just the tagged item .mechanism: tag → activates personal schema → spreads to associated memories .distinct from a simple label: an anchor has associative weight built through use // ##aa-vs-label ~label: #important — no personal context, no spreading activation ~associative anchor: #my-refactor-insight — triggers memory of the whole session →the more specific the anchor, the richer the recall — precision over generality // ##aa-neuro *spreading activation theory — Collins & Loftus, 1975 *personal anchors connect to unique nodes — no interference from other users' tags *link: Semantic Memory — anchor creates new node in personal semantic network

04//Interactivity-induced SaliencePerception
// ##is-def =Interactivity-induced Salience — visual prominence gained by a content element through user interaction, making it stand out from the informational background .distinct from pre-attentive salience — earned through action, not inherited from design .the user's own past choices become visual landmarks in future sessions
Live demo — click items to make them salient, or double-click to anchor (gold). See how interaction changes what stands out.

// ##is-mechanism *color change after interaction is pre-attentive in future views — pre-attentive processing *the element jumps to attention before focused reading begins *creates a personal attention scaffold — your highlights guide future you →CLN anchor colors (gold, cyan, rose…) are 5 distinct salience channels →tag badges float above the line — maximum visual salience without obscuring content

Cognitive Workbench
all three tools converge in a single #tagmarry gesture — compress → anchor → make salient — simultaneously
// ##int-synergy +one tagmarry = compression + anchor + salience simultaneously +each tool amplifies the others — not additive but multiplicative +the workbench is the CLN document + the reader's traces = the complete system

06//Workbench WorkflowHow
Scan with pre-attentive vision
Operators and colors orient attention before reading begins. Existing salience landmarks (from prior session) appear immediately.
Read a CLN block
Short punchy lines force semantic processing. Each operator signals cognitive type — no ambiguity about what kind of statement you're reading.
Select + Right-click → Tagmarry workbench active
Semantic Compression: you choose a label. Associative Anchor: label binds to ##id. Salience: tag badge appears. Event Boundary triggered.
Continue reading — or return later
On reload: visual traces restore. Pre-attentive system instantly sees your salience landscape. Mental time travel to the tagging moment.
Export CLN overlay
All workbench traces become a portable CLN document — shareable, importable to other tools, usable for spaced repetition.

07//LimitationsTradeoffs
// ##cw-limits -workbench only as good as the underlying document structure — poor CLN = poor workbench -localStorage scope — traces don't travel with the document across domains -anchor pollution — too many tags per page degrades salience system (all salient = none salient) // ##cw-mitigation →mitigation: CLN export creates portable overlay — moves with the reader →self-regulation: anchor only lines with genuine insight — not every line →5 distinct anchor colors = 5 parallel salience channels — use deliberately
