The Extended Mind
If a tool reliably performs cognitive functions—storing, structuring, retrieving thought—it is not "helping
you think." It is the thinking.
01/Definition
Theory
= Extended Mind Thesis: Cognitive
processes extend beyond the biological brain into external tools.
= A system where a notebook or screen is
functionally equivalent to neural storage.
02/The Parity Principle
"If, as we confront some task, a part of the world functions as a process which, were it done in the head,
we would have no hesitation in recognizing as part of the cognitive process, then that part of the world is
part of the cognitive process."
03/4E Cognition Framework
Embodied Thinking involves the physical body.
Embedded Thinking is situated in an environment.
Extended Thinking uses external artifacts.
Enactive Thinking arises from interaction.
04/CLN as Cognitive
Extension
Implementation
+ Reliability:
One-fact-per-line structure makes external retrieval more reliable than biological recall.
+ Scanning:
Operator-based scanning is faster than mental search.
+ Capacity: Hierarchy
enables complex analysis exceeding the 4 ± 1 item working memory limit.
= A CLN file meets the parity principle:
it is cognition, externalized.
