Info-Chunking
= grouping data into cognitive units @ Miller (1956) / Cowan (2001)
Without explicit chunking, prose becomes a "wall of text" that the brain cannot efficiently process.
01 / Definition Term
= Info-Chunking — grouping individual pieces of information into larger, meaningful units (chunks)
= primary method for bypassing working memory limits
02 / Mechanism Limits
. working memory capacity: ~7±2 items (Miller) or ~4 chunks (Cowan)
. chunking "compresses" data: [1, 9, 8, 4] (4 items) → [1984] (1 chunk)
. expertise: masters have larger, more complex chunks (Chase & Simon, 1973)
03 / CLN as Chunking Tool Practical
. operators act as "chunk headers" defining the semantic type
. indentation creates sub-chunks within chunks (recursive structure)
. scanning the operator column = reading chunk metadata before content
+ CLN makes chunking EXPLICIT and VISIBLE rather than implicit
04 / Risks Threats
- "Wall of text" syndrome: undifferentiated data causes cognitive overload
- digital amnesia: unchunked information resists long-term encoding
