Before you recognize an object, your brain detects its texture. In the early 1980s, cognitive scientist Béla Julesz proposed that textures are processed by detecting fundamental microstructures called Textons. This theory explains why some textures "pop out" instantly while others require careful inspection. CLN leverages similar principles: operators act as visual textons for the mind.

The "Pop-out" Effect
Mechanism
=
Critical discovery: Discrimination depends on texton differences
Condition A — Different Textons
.
Example: A field of 'L's vs a field of 'T's
→
Result: Instant segregation (Parallel processing)
*
Terminators differ (L has ends, T has crossing)
Condition B — Same Textons
.
Example: A field of 'L's vs rotated 'L's
→
Result: Serial search required (Slow)
!
Requires conscious attention to find target

Operator Column = Texture Field
.
! (Bang) acts as a distinct texton class
.
. (Dot) acts as a distinct texton class
→
Result: Pre-attentive filtering of risks vs actions
Why it works
+
Brain detects shape differences (
! vs .) instantly
+
Eliminates the need for serial reading
-
Uniform text (prose) lacks texton diversity
A texton is a visual word the brain reads before the mind understands.
